Happy New Year loves!
2018 felt like it flew by so fast, but I’m so ready to take on 2019! I’m looking forward to all the new opportunities this year will bring, and really want to dedicate this year to growing, improving, and chasing my dreams. This is my first post of 2019, and I’m so excited to bring you fresh content this year!
Northern Vietnam was the focus of this trip, namely Hanoi, Ninh Binh, and Halong Bay. We flew into Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, and spent our first full day exploring Hanoi Old Quarter. The Old Quarter feels like a place paused in time, still vibrant with history, and brimming with cultural influences from China and France to name a few. Keep scrolling to see the sites we visited, the Airbnb we stayed at, and details on my outfit. Hanoi needs to be on your travel bucket list for sure!
AIRBNB
I absolutely adore the two-story Airbnb that we stayed at in the Old Quarter of Hanoi. The tropical balcony with hanging plants felt like a hidden oasis in the middle of the city, and was always a treat to come to after a day of exploring. The rooms are super cute and comfortable, and the location is in the heart of the Old Quarter. You’re steps from the Hanoi Opera House and a 5-10 minute walk to Hoàn Kiếm Lake.

Sun-bathing on the only day of sunshine and no rain during our Vietnam trip! Gotta relish the sun when you have it!
Street vendors walk around the Old Quarter selling food, fruit, and other goods from hand-woven baskets.
Another thing to note is that everyone seems to ride motorcycles in Hanoi, and you can literally see them parked everywhere! One of our tour guides told us that for every 2 people, there’s 1 motorcycle in Hanoi!
TEMPLE OF LITERATURE
The Temple of Literature was built in 1070 during the reign of Emperor Ly Thanh Tong, and was dedicated to Confucius, and Vietnam’s finest scholars and sages. It is also the site of Vietnam’s first university, the Imperial Academy, since 1076. It’s a gorgeous example of traditional Vietnamese architecture, and features five courtyards, serene gardens, the Stelae of the Doctors, and altars to Confucius and his disciples.

It’s amazing to walk around Old Quarter and see gorgeous architecture like this mixed in with modern architecture.
HANOI TRAIN STREET
Isn’t it bizarre to imagine a train running inches from your doorway? That’s exactly what happens at 3 and 7 pm every single day for the residents living on Hanoi Train Street in the Old Quarter! You need to go in person and check it out for yourself. Some areas of the street are even narrower than others, so you can really reach out and touch the train if you wanted to! I really love how quirky and fun this street is, and it reminds me that people live so differently all over the world.
Address: Ngõ 224 Lê Duẩn (Between Lê Duẩn and Khâm Thin Street).
These are some more views of the grounds at the Temple Of Literature. I can just imagine Confucius and his students walking among the gardens and immersing themselves in study.
ST. JOSEPH’S CATHEDRAL
St. Joseph’s Cathedral is a visual marker of French colonialism in Vietnamese history. It was built by the French Colonial Government in 1886, and is the oldest church in Hanoi. For those who love architecture, it’s also a beautiful example of the Gothic Revival style. The cathedral currently serves nearly 4 million Catholics in the country, and conducts mass several times a day.
Address: 40 Nhà Chung, Hàng Trống, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội 100000, Vietnam
Isn’t Hanoi beautiful? I hope I’ve piqued your interest in visiting Vietnam. Be on the look out for more northern Vietnam travel content coming your way where I’ll be covering Halong Bay and Ninh Binh, so stay tuned!
We have 12 chapters, and 365 opportunities to make this year our best year yet. Let’s rock this year together! Happy 2019!
XOXO
